Why grad parties need a photo booth

Graduation parties are one of the few times the whole family, a crowd of friends and a couple of favorite teachers are in the same backyard. Everybody takes photos on their phones, and almost none of them end up anywhere. A booth fixes that: one place where every guest takes a proper photo with the graduate, and one folder where all of those photos end up.

Rental booths for grad season are expensive and book out early. A laptop running Roll Booth costs nothing, and the button on this page opens it with a graduation look ready to go.

How to set it up at your party

  1. Pick a shady spot. For a backyard party, set the booth under a tree, a canopy or a porch roof. Direct sun on faces makes harsh shadows; open shade is flattering.
  2. Build a simple backdrop. A sheet in school colors, a balloon garland, or a banner with the graduate's name and year.
  3. Open the booth on a laptop. Press Open the graduation booth and allow the camera. The Photo Strip and Golden Hour are already selected.
  4. Add a big screen indoors. For an open house inside, mirror the laptop to the TV with an HDMI cable (Win + P on Windows; System Settings โ†’ Displays โ†’ Mirror on a Mac) or cast it to a Chromecast or Apple TV. Outdoors, the laptop screen is easier to see in daylight.
  5. Raise the laptop to eye level. A stack of old textbooks is thematically perfect.
  6. Set out the props. A spare cap, the diploma cover, the college's T-shirt or pennant, and a sign with the class year. Parents will want one photo holding the diploma.
  7. Keep it charged. Outdoor parties run long. Plug the laptop in with an extension cord rather than trusting the battery.

Graduation photo booth ideas

Then and now

Print the graduate's kindergarten or first-day-of-school photo and have them hold it in the first shot. The second and third shots are now. It is the photo every grandparent asks for.

The cap toss, contained

Three shots: holding the cap, mid-throw, and the chaos after. A countdown before each photo gives you time to catch it.

Future plans

Chalkboard or whiteboard signs that say where each guest thinks the graduate will be in ten years. Read them out at the end of the party.

Family generations

Six Grid gives every branch of the family its own frame: the graduate with parents, with grandparents, with siblings, with cousins, with the dog, and one of everyone together.

The teacher shot

If a favorite teacher or coach comes, make sure they get a strip with the graduate. Those are the photos people treasure later.

Choosing your graduation look

  • Golden Hour โ€” the preset filter. Warm, glowing, flattering outdoors.
  • Sun Kissed โ€” gentler warmth for bright days.
  • Film โ€” soft, low-saturation, like a family photo from an old album.
  • Noir โ€” black and white; makes caps and gowns look timeless.

After the shot, the studio lets you add text. The graduate's name and Class of 2026 in a corner turns every strip into a keepsake. For more ideas, see our graduation photostrip ideas.

Collecting every guest's photos

Strips save to the laptop as PNGs. Keep a shared album open (Google Photos or iCloud) and drop strips in during the party, then share the link in the family group chat. Nothing is uploaded to Roll Booth, so the photos only go where you put them.

For a memory book, print the strips on 4ร—6 photo paper at home and have guests sign next to their own photo. Every download carries a small rollbooth.com mark in the corner.

Relatives who can't travel

Grandparents who can't make the trip can still be in a strip. Group booth, in the layout chooser under Shoot together, from anywhere, lets up to four people in different places pose on the same countdown and end up in the same photo. Send them the link before the party and pick a time.
