Why a photo booth works on Valentine's Day

Couples take hundreds of photos a year, almost all of them selfies at arm's length. How to set it up at your party

Whether it is a date night for two or a Galentine's party for twelve, the setup is the same:

1. Pick a soft backdrop. A pink or red sheet, a wall of paper hearts, or fairy lights behind a sheer curtain. For two people, a patch of wall about four feet wide is enough.
2. Open the booth on a laptop. Press Open the Valentine's booth and allow the camera. The Polaroid Heart frame and Hearts filter are already chosen.
3. Mirror it to the TV for a party. HDMI to the TV and duplicate the screen (Win + P on Windows; System Settings → Displays → Mirror on a Mac), or cast the tab to a Chromecast or Apple TV. For a date night, the laptop screen is plenty.
4. Get the camera to eye level. Books under the laptop. It is the difference between a flattering photo and a chin-heavy one.
5. Use warm light. A lamp with a warm bulb beside the laptop, pointing at your faces. Candles alone are romantic but too dark for a camera.
6. Put out a few props. Paper hearts on sticks, a single rose, conversation-heart signs. Less is more; this is about the two of you.

Find your very first photo together and recreate the pose. Put the new one next to the old one in the studio or print them side by side. It gets better every year you repeat it.

Galentine's lineup

Write one word each on paper hearts and hold them up in the shot. After the photo, add the date as text in the studio — February 14 in a handwritten style.

You each pose in front of your own camera, the countdown runs on both screens, and every photo in the strip shows the two of you side by side — like squeezing into the same booth from different cities.

It is peer to peer: your video goes directly between your two devices, and the photos end up on both of them.

Choosing your Valentine's look

• Hearts — the preset filter. Warm and soft with a heart overlay.
• Retro — warm, slightly faded sepia; a love letter from the seventies.
• Soft Matte — low contrast and washed out, gentle on skin.
• Golden Hour — warm and saturated, like sunset light, even indoors.

Keeping the photos
