Two photos, each in a cream border of little dark stars, on a green canvas background — scrapbook-cute rather than formal. Golden Hour warms everything up like late-afternoon sun, which is flattering on skin and makes formal colors glow.

Where a prom photo booth fits

Prom photos usually happen in two places: the pre-prom gathering, where parents take a hundred pictures on the lawn, and the after-party, where nobody takes any good ones. A booth works in both. At the pre-prom it gives the group something fun to do while everyone waits for the last date to arrive; at the after-party it catches the loosened ties and kicked-off heels, which are honestly the better photos.

If the school or venue does not have a booth, a laptop running Roll Booth is a free one. The button on this page opens it with a prom look already chosen.

How to set it up at your party

  1. Choose a plain wall or a doorway. Formal wear is busy enough; the background should not be. A plain wall, a dark curtain or a doorway into a dark room all work.
  2. Open the booth on a laptop. Press Open the prom booth, allow the camera, and the Star Border frame and Golden Hour filter are already selected.
  3. Put it on a TV at the after-party. Plug in with HDMI and duplicate the screen (Win + P on Windows; System Settings → Displays → Mirror on a Mac), or cast it to a Chromecast or Apple TV.
  4. Stand back far enough for full outfits. Put the laptop on a table about six to eight feet from the wall and raise it on books to chest height, so dresses and suits fit in the frame.
  5. Light from the front. A lamp or ring light beside the laptop, pointing at the group. Outdoors before prom, face people toward the sun rather than away from it.
  6. Keep the instructions obvious. A small card: Tap once — a countdown runs before each photo.

Prom photo booth ideas

The corsage close-up

First shot: the classic couple pose. Second shot: just the hands, corsage and boutonniere, held up to the camera. Two photos that tell the whole story of the night.

The friend-group four

Four Cuts with the whole group: serious, laughing, pointing at the one friend who is late, and a jump. It is the strip that ends up as the group chat's profile picture.

Red carpet arrivals

Cinema Duo with Flash makes every couple look like they are walking into a premiere. Have people pose like they are being photographed by paparazzi — hand up, looking away.

Before and after

One strip at the pre-prom when everyone looks perfect, one at midnight when nobody does. Put them side by side the next day.

The promposal recreation

If there was a promposal sign, bring it and recreate the moment in the booth. It is a better keepsake than the sign itself.

Choosing your prom look

  • Golden Hour — the preset filter. Warm, saturated and flattering.
  • Flash — hard, bright red-carpet light.
  • Y2K Chrome — a cool silvery sheen that suits sequins and metallic dresses.
  • Noir — high-contrast black and white; timeless and very flattering in formal wear.

Every filter can be changed before you shoot, and the studio lets you add text — the school name and the year look great in a corner. For more on getting good photos in low light, read our photo booth lighting guide.

Getting everyone their photos

Strips download to the laptop as PNGs. Drop them into a shared album — Google Photos or an iCloud shared album — and send the link to the group. Nothing is uploaded to Roll Booth, so no photos of students end up anywhere you did not put them yourself, which parents tend to appreciate. Downloads carry a small rollbooth.com mark in the corner.

For parents and prom committees

If you are organizing, a laptop booth is a free alternative to renting one. It needs a table, a power outlet, a lamp and one volunteer to keep an eye on it. Because the photos stay on that laptop, you control exactly where they are shared afterward — handy for a school event.
